Hello Friends!
It’s Kayla your Fat Positive Therapist checking in to talk fiscal transparency and my hatred for paywalls.
I hate capitalism. The idea of making more and more money just to buy fancier things never sat well with me. Especially, with how large the wealth disparity is in America. I firmly believe we would be better off understanding what we need to safely survive and trying to meet that fiscal need with considering your physical capacity and labor. All for communal care.
This belief is a huge part of why I haven’t really sought to make money off of my years of advocacy work. This isn’t a moral superiority post but an honoring of what has felt right for me in this space. I am very privileged that my income as a therapist has allowed me this opportunity. I would never judge someone for requiring support for their work and FULLY support paying for the labor of creators.
FOR ME posting on social media and writing articles hasn’t been incredibly time consuming as they have been special interest motivated. Asking for fiscal support hadn’t seemed important thus far.
However, as I have moved forward with the podcast (which I love) I am finding that things are more time consuming and that I am unable to cover the overhead necessary for the time it takes to interview, edit and post episodes.
For my Tarot enthusiasts, during this Lunar Eclipse season I pulled a 6 of Pentacles. This card explores the importance of not only being a giver but to embrace the vulnerability of being a receiver. When I pulled the card, I was confused because I couldn’t think of how this pertained to my current situation. Until this morning, as I am going through business tax junk and I realized that I don’t let people support my creativity and labor.
My work is to unpack if that has to do with my perceived sense of value or worth. Like I always say we are always doing the work. I am a wildly independent person (cue childhood trauma). As a healer my comfort is in providing. Giving to others what I have always struggled to access myself. I have some serious unpacking work to do around this one, thank you 6 of Pentacles. So here is my first step!
